Again a Food Fair – this time in Leipzig

September really was the month of Food Fairs. In Leipzig we had the Le Gourmet – Fair from 14th until 17th September. More than 18 000 people visited the Fair and enjoyed the culinary highlights, learned about latest cooking equipment and simply had a good time. Here are some impressions:
Regional producers presented their culinary diversity. On this picture you see Sachsenobst, a regional juice producer.

Show-cooking was one of the Le-Gourmet Highlights. Star and TV cooks from Germany allowed the people to see a live demonstration of their cooking knowledge. But the show-kitchen was not the only highlight. Visitors could also actively participate in several cooking workshops and cooking courses.

A vegetable carving workshop took also place. Here you can see what you can create out of pumpkins …. It´s more than food, it´s also art.
A Grill & Chill Area gave some Spanish flair to the Fair. People could relax here and enjoy Mallorca Style Cuisine. And a chocolatier presented his very very innovative chocolate-mint-salami …

If we could awaken you interest then come to Leipzig next year. The Fair will be held from 5th – 7th September 2014.

The power of mind into rice

You can also browse other food fairs in Catalonia related to fruit that ripens in September, such as cheese, almonds, figs, peaches, oil, wine, beer, apples, walnuts.... There is a wonderful fair in Agramunt, related to nougat and chocolate stone. Last year they were giving samples of salty chocolate nougat...and you could dip your fingers in a hot chocolate fountain!!

Traditional nougat from Agramunt
Go nuts for food...but watch out for side effects! ;-)

Food exhibition in Leipzig

The historical panel in Leipzig, part of the Foundation "House of History" of the Federal Republic of Germany hosts a temporary exhibition about eating and drinking in Germany.

The small exhibition shows about 1200 objects, as for example the first recipe book in German language and other exhibits related to the topic. It focalises nutrition habits in Germany and its development during the past 60 years, including factors like family, life style, job, conviction, religion and many more. Another core theme is multi-cultural cuisine. In this sense one of the exhibits shows the guest book of the first German pizza place. One interesting part approaches the topic "price and quality" and how much ethnical and ecologic criteria influence food habits nowadays. Of course sustainability and food waste plays its part in the exhibition as well, especially referring to the differences between the German post-war era and todays "waste-society".

All in all it is a nice interactiv exhibition which introduces many interesting topics regarding food. We hope we could awaken your interest, since we will include a tour through the museum in the program of the next project meeting.

PECULIAR FESTIVAL IN LLEIDA

In Lleida city, this  May 2013 Moorish troops led by Said Musa will reconquer the city to the Christian side led by the christian captain from the Urgell troops. This staging fights between Muslims and Christians is unique in Lleida for victory alternates, so one year the Moors win, and the next the Christians do it. Since the recovery of this celebration, eighteen years ago, the Moors and Christians wanted to be an example of respect and coexistence between cultures. This curious parade takes place after the notorious Festa Major (local festival) in Lleida, during the weekend of 18th and 19th May 2013. The location of the parade is Seu Vella, the beautiful cathedral that overlooks the city of Lleida from the hill.

Another strange but very dear tradition is the APLEC DEL CARGOL (Snail-eating Festival) in which groups of people gather together to have fun, drink, dance and above all, eat snails... and other foods that do not cause offense to eyes, brain or digestive juices. It is regarded as a Traditional Festival of National Interest. You can see the pictures (of the gatherings and the snails) HERE.
